Apples from the teacher (well ex teacher)

Presents for all!!

IMG_0282

Now I am not a huge fan of doilies but I have made coasters for my home to save my furniture. When I saw a picture of apple coasters I knew I had to have some. Most patterns were just circular and I wanted apple shaped so I have made one up inspired by my frosty flakes pattern in that it uses stitches of various sizes to shape things. So I thought you guys might like it too. So everyone gets a present on Lou’s birthday!!! Enjoy.

 Apple Mug rugs

Round 1: Make a magic circle then ch3 now tr 11 into the ring and pull up sl st to 3rd of the 3ch. (12 st)

Round 2: ch 3 tr in same st. Work 2 tr into each tr to end sl st to 3rd of the 3ch. (24 st)

Round 3: ch 3 2 tr into next st *1tr into next , 2 tr into next. Repeat from * to end. sl st to 3rd of the 3ch. (36 st)

Round 4: ch1, Dc in next, 2 htr in next, 2 tr in each of the next 2 st. 1 tr in next 2 tr in next 1 htr in next dc in next. Sl st in each of the next 5 st.2 htr in next, 2tr in next 2 dc in next sl st between next 2 st. ( centre bottom) Now reverse the above!

2dc in next, 2tr in next, 2htr in next, sl st each of the next 5 st. dc in the next, 1htr in the next, 2 tr in the next , 1 tr in the next, 2 tr in each of the next 2 st, 2 htr in the next, dc in the next 2 st sl st between the next 2 st.

Round 4: Work dc in each but work 2 dc into 4 places on the curvy bits to stop curling. Sl st in first st fasten off. ( You can leave this out if you like, I know its a bit random)

Leaves (make 2)

Magic ring, 3 ch work 4 htr, tr, ch 3 sl st into 3rd ch from hook, 1tr, 5 htr into ring sl st in 3rd of 3ch. Fasten off

Stitch leaves to apple and weave in ends.

  11. And it was "Crochet with Raymond" that brought me over to you. She made these adorable coasters and posted them as part of everything she has made in the past year...so I had to come have a look. I dare say - I want them to be part of what I've crocheted in the past year too! How fun are these? And great gifts too! Oh dear, the holidays will be upon us again before we know what's hit us! Time to get started! Thanks for sharing this adorable project! Annette

  13. Thought you might like to know that your pattern and pictures have been stolen and used for profit. After having my own pattern stolen from this girl, I decided to let others know this is happening. She has no fear of being caught and even thinks it's funny.

  18. I just attempted to follow your pattern and I have to say it gets confusing during round 4. There are no comma's separating each step. I had to re-do the round 3 times before I figured it out. Example: you wrote "1 tr in next 2 tr in next 1 htr in next dc in next." do you mean 1 tr in next, 2 tr in next, 1 htr in next, dc in next. or do you mean 1 tr in next 2, tr in next, 1 htr in next, dc in next? Do you see how that could alter the pattern if read wrong? Comma's are important. In the end it came out cute.

    1. I had issues with that too. And in the last round she says to "work 2 dc into 4 places on the curvy bits" which is also very confusing.

  19. I've posted with a link to your pattern, I hope you don't mind! http://wannabecrunchy.com/free-apple-scrubbie-crochet-pattern/

  20. I also had some issues following along. I think I'll try retyping it so it's easier to follow as I'm crocheting.

Also, how do you sl st between 2 stitches?

    ReplyDelete
  21. It would help if those of you who figured out where the commas SHOULD be actually posted the corrections instead of only commenting in the fact that you figured it out. Please help I'm so frustrated. Tired if redoing this. Please post a correction

  23. This is for Rene and anyone else who is confused!

Here is my interpretation of the instructions. I was able to finally make 4 great coasters after making 2 lousy ones.

Round 1: Magic circle, ch 3, tr 11 into the ring, sl st into 3rd ch (of the first ch 3) to connect/finish the round (12 st total)

Round 2: ch 3, tr into same st, repeat [2 tr into each st] until end, sl st into 3rd ch to finish the round (24 st total)

Round 3: ch 3, 2 tr into next, repeat [1 tr into next, 2 tr into next] until end, sl st into 3rd ch to finish the round (36 st total)

    Round 4:
    ch 1
    dc in next
    2 htr in next
    2 tr in next
    2 tr in next
    tr in next
    2 tr in next
    htr in next
    dc in next
sl in st in each of next 5
    2 htr in next
    2 tr in next
    2 dc in next
    sl between next 2 st

(Now reverse the above using the following instructions:)

    2 dc in next
    2 tr in next
    2 htr in next
sl in st in each of next 5
    dc in next
    htr in next
    2 tr in next
    tr in next
    2 tr in next
    2 tr in next
    2 htr in next
    2 dc in next
sl st between next 2 st.

Round 5: dc in each until you go around the whole apple. sl st to fasten off.

Please don't ask me to explain the leaf pattern! I gave up and found a super simple leaf pattern and adjusted it to fit the size I wanted.

    Some tips:
    1. This is a UK pattern. PLEASE google "crochet stitch us vs uk" if you don't understand what that means for this pattern.
    2. If your coaster is turning out to have a lot of curl and not lie flat, please visit tip #1. My treble crochet stitch was far too long because I was making the US version of a treble crochet stitch.
    3. Round 4 is what turns the coaster from a circular shape to an apple shape. When you get to the part where you reverse the pattern, make sure you're halfway done with the apple, if not, try to adjust. I felt like I never got it exactly right. Sometimes I had more stitches left to do, but I was already to the top. I honestly don't know how you make a stitch "between" two stitches. I eye-balled it and adjusted at the halfway point and just before the end to have it finish right.
    4. Round 5 just adds a little bit more to the apple to make it bigger. Don't worry about putting in extra dc stitches. I found it kind of gave a tiny bit of an edge when I did, so I just left them out, and I liked how that turned out.

Feel free to see my results on my ravelry project page for it: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/weathershenker/apple-coasters

    5. Wish I had read your comment when I was on rd 4. I re did that section 2x. I ended up cutting & pasting into a word document, translating to US terms, then putting each step on a separate line. Mine didn't curl & I skipped the part where it said you can ad double crochets in the corners. Once you figure all that out it turns out really nice.

  24. what type of yarn was used and the needle size, please????

    ReplyDelete
  25. The ravelry page for this pattern which is here: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/apple-coasters
    says...
    Yarn: DK / 8 ply (11 wpi)
    Needle size: US 6 - 4.0 mm

(For my coasters, I personally used Berroco Weekend DK yarn and 4.0 mm (G) hook.)

Would be great if someone would email me because I was hoping to make these for my daughter for Xmas! Thanks loads!

  32. I have been crocheting since I was 8 that's 27 years. I can crochet anything by video, by pattern, graphs, off the top of my head, and even by pictures but I have tried to crochet this coaster 10 times and it's a hot mess everytime. I wrote down the pattern converted it to English stitches. I separated the stitches added punctuation where needed and nope nothing. The pictures listed are gorgeous I wish this pattern was cleaned up and accurate.

  34. I made several of these for teacher appreciation week. Really cute pattern but horribly written. I spent more time rewriting it than I did actually crocheting. Once I put in punctuation and separated one stitch from the other, they worked up perfectly and are super cute.
