Gauge is a pain isn't it? For years I was a "tight" knitter but more recently have become a loose knitter! I remeber knitting a Pingouin pattern fairilse sweater in sixth form and having to knit the back three times before it was the correct size (I still for the life of me don't know why I didn't knit a swatch - but I think that was because I was too inexperienced to know that that was what you did!).<br />I'd probably agree re your comments - you can always add a few extra rows in if necessary, but it is a pain trying to work out the different number of stitches and how many to have/reduce and increase.
